05/7/14 Backpacking for Beginners

The more I do explore, the more I realize I know nothing about backpacking. The REI website has a backpacking for beginners article. At least when I start backpacking, I’d rather let out (or borrow) than purchase something I may not like as well as I thought. These are good to look through, though I have yet to do that myself, quite yet. The article talks about choosing a backpack, however there is another article specifically about that , which I will be reviewing immediately, so I won’t be discussing it here. REI has a list of ‘10 essentials’ and an ultralight checklist. TEST HIKES. Apparently REI does welcome people to come in, try on backpacks, even ones with test loads in. (There is also an article about backpacking with kids , which I will not be reviewing as I do not have children. This entrance is mostly just a review of the one REI article about backpacking for beginners. Also, during the smaller hikes, test carry a full backpack. CHOOSING A BACKPACK. I had no idea how to start prevalent about that, however. During test hikes, pick elevation changes that would be challenging to you. Also mentioned, is that tents, backpacks, etc. I have to say, so far, I am loving REI, even if I can’t currently afford to buy anything from them. It also recommends to get carefree with the gear before setting out, practice setting up the tent, the bedroll, and packing things up, how to use the stove, etc. This is something I’ll be looking into for the start. BORROWING/RENTING. I contemplate to find other sources as I can and definitely will be writing about my experiences once I actually find a group or someone to go backpacking with. Some things it talks about are properly obvious, like going with an experienced friend or joining a group, pick a destination beforehand, pick somewhere properly easy, do smaller hikes to build up physical condition and always make sure someone knows... Carrying a entirely test-backpack helps with endurance, as well, I’m sure, but it’s also to get an idea of how heavy it will be, if you’ll be able to carry that over longer distances, and to get a more wisely idea of what things you can do without. can be rented from REI.
